Understanding the “Recalculate Actual Units and Costs when duration % complete changes” Option
If you have the Recalculate Actual Units and Costs when duration % complete changes checked then the Remaining Units and Costs should be recalculated when a task is set as In Progress and the Remaining Duration is less than the Original Duration.
What I have found in Version 20, but other versions may calculate differently:
- If a Task Dependent task is updated and set as In Progress, then both the Units and Costs are both updated as expected.
- A LOE and WBS Summary task only has the units updated but not the costs. I think this is a bug, one of many but maybe there is something somewhere in the Help file, I have not checked.

How do I make the LOE and WBS Summary Task calculate the Resource Actual and Remaining Costs
So, what is the solution, simple, select the menu item Tools, Recalculate Assignment Costs:
Before Updating
I have assigned one resource to the three tasks, a LOE, Task Dependent and WBS Summary.
After Updating
The Task Dependent task units and costs are updated as expected, but the WBS Summary and LOE tasks units are updated but the WBS Summary and LOE tasks costs are not updated.
To Recalculate the Resource Costs
Now select Tools, Recalculate Assignment Cost and the LOE and WBS Summary Costs are recalculated.
Things to Remember!
Remember your activity Duration Type will affect your calculation of the Remaining Units and Costs.
If you have changed your resource rates then the new resource rate will be applied to the resource costs.
