"O son of Pṛthā (Kunti), there is no work prescribed for Me within all the three planetary systems. Nor am I in want of anything, nor have I a need to obtain anything – and yet I am engaged in prescribed duties." Bhagavad Gita 3.22
Lord Krishna is not answerable to anyone, not bound by any obligation, not in want of anything, not need anything. What then makes him engaged in the prescribed duties diligently. This is a question everyone would ask, and the answer is a great Leadership lesson.
Lord Krishna answers this in the very next sloka in Bhagavad Gita:
"If I ever fail to perform the prescribed duties carefully, O Partha, all people would follow my path always (thinking that would be the right way thus ruining the world and I don’t want to be the reason for that to happen)."
Very cryptic verse but meaningful and thought provoking.
Shri Krishna urged Arjuna to always perform action and not give up responsibilities under any pretext. He urges us also to become role models by continually performing selfless actions, with complete attention and alertness always.
Best motivation to make someone to perform their responsibilities would be to lead them from the front and live as a 'Role Model'. Lord Krishna makes it very clear that lesser mortals have the tendency to look forward to the leaders and get guided by their actions. Lord Krishna thus becomes the Role Model for all the Leaders.
A role model is someone who inspires others by demonstrating their ideals, attitudes, or deeds. Leaders act as role models by demonstrating integrity, perseverance, positivity, and confidence. Others aspire to be like their role models. As a result, leaders conduct themselves in the same way that they want their people to perform in the workplace.
Human beings are social animals who define their identities through relationships with each other. Our need for belongingness makes us keen to assimilate into the groups we are part of.
One way we may do this in a work environment is by incorporating the values and attitudes of our leaders into our own identities. Leaders thus act as role models and others follow.
You must become the change you want to see in your team or organization.
