Using INTENTION to Your Advantage: Boost Sales Success

You may think you understand intentions, but do you really? Do you know how to set one? How to apply it? How to use it to your advantage?

In selling, or within the sales process, have you ever recognized or analyzed the days when your own activities produced your greatest results? Or conversely, your poorest results?

Often times when you analyze them - your behind-the-scenes answer can be sourced all the way back to your intentions. Did you know that you can set one in advance?

This week's article will dive into defining intention and providing you with insights on how you can set intentions and apply them in your daily activities. If you take the time to do this, you are increasing the chances for positive results to occur for your business, leading to intended successes. The info shared here can be applied towards personal goals and is a great topic to teach our children! I have taught my own children this same mindset!

Let's dive in

Intention - as defined by the dictionary:

in·ten·tion

inˈten(t)SH(ə)n/

and is a noun.

  1. a thing intended; an aim or plan. "she was full of good intentions"
  2. MEDICINE the healing process of a wound.

Based on the fact that it is a noun in the English language, we can begin to understand it as a tangible item, it says it’s A THING intended. If you take a look at the second half of the definition “an aim or plan” you can begin to see where it flows within The System that I teach my coaching clients. At the core of this action based system is IDEA> GOAL> PLAN> EXECUTE. An aim = IDEA and or GOAL. The Plan = the action steps you will write down and prioritize so that you can begin to execute or take action towards the desired outcomes!

OK, now that we have defined INTENTION, let me guide your understanding on how to put this into practice. Over my 19 years as a master sales trainer and coach, I have implemented this proven method. The standard practice used by some of the most successful people is to WRITE YOUR INTENTIONS DOWN! The brain is a funny thing. It is however a supercomputer, and when you begin to take the time to think about HOW to change or create a habit(s), you begin to take stock of the habit(s) and part of the take stock process is writing it out so that it can be organized and prioritized on paper, as well as in the brain. And actually just by beginning to read this article you are setting an intention that you are about to change a habit that you may have regarding your business sales practice, so you're already doing it!

Did you know - if you ask your brain a HOW question, it will act upon that directive and produce results until the question is resolved!

Here is how you can begin to utilize 3 of the human senses - touch (writing), vision & if you are like me, speaking my intentions out loud for hearing our written intentions, thus internalizing them to a greater depth. Go ahead and grab a piece of paper right now. I’ll give you some examples of questions you can ask yourself, when you have an answer, write it down.

Today is about intention!

I want you to set the intention that today, on a scale of one to ten, your effort and energy level will be at a level seven, eight, nine, or a ten!

Write that down right now.

Write down, "I am committed to playing at a seven today," or an eight, nine, ten or whatever number resonates with you. You have total control over the effort that you choose to play at on a daily basis.

What time will you work until today? Four o'clock? Five o'clock? Seven o'clock? Nine o'clock?

It depends on your schedule and what you have going on, so write down, "I commit to playing at a level seven, or eight, or nine, or ten until eight o'clock tonight." (If that's how long you plan on working.)

Now, what must you accomplish today?

Write it down.

How many sales calls do you have?

Write down, "My outcome for sales call number one is ..." and then write down what it is that you want to accomplish in that sales call. Maybe it’s to close a sale or maybe it's to book the next appointment or whatever the case may be.

Are you going to do any prospecting today? How many prospecting touches?

Write down "I will prospect with calls, texts, email, and direct messages on social media."

How many people will you reach out to today?

These are just some ideas. Be kind to others today. I encourage you to have a great attitude today. Remember attitude is a choice. We all get to decide what our attitude is going to be for the day.

"Make it a great day!"
