The Frog and the Scorpion: Want to Double Your Income?

I want to share with you an exercise that I walk many of my clients through. Many of them have taken this exact exercise and literally doubled their income.

This is a story about a woman named Jandee. I was on a coaching call with Jandee, who at the time was a newbie in the loan business. I asked her, "Jandee, how much money do you believe that you can make in a month?" Let me ask you right now—How much money do you believe that you can make in a month? Whatever the answer is, write it down here: I believe I can make __________________________ per month.

Jandee said, "Five thousand dollars." "Okay, Jandee," I replied. "Now take that number and double it." So what I’d like you to do right now, take the number you wrote down, double it, and write this number here: I believe I can make __________________________ per month. Jandee said, "Ten thousand dollars." I said, "Jandee, tell yourself that you’re going to earn ten thousand dollars in the next thirty days." So she did that.

Now, you tell yourself that you’re going to earn your new doubled amount in the next thirty days. I said, "Jandee, what did the little voice in the back of your head tell you when you told yourself that you were going to earn that doubled amount in the next thirty days?" Jandee smiled knowingly and replied, "It said you’re crazy! Not in this lifetime. Yeah, right. You would have been lucky to earn five thousand."

Embrace the Law of Belief

You know you have a voice in the back of your head too, right? That little voice speaks to you at up to five hundred words a minute. Now, as I just said that to you, you might have been thinking to yourself, "What’s Eric talking about? I don’t have a voice in the back of my head that talks to me up to five hundred words a minute." That’s the voice that I’m talking about! You might have seen the movie What Women Want with Mel Gibson, where Mel walks by women and he can hear their inner thoughts.

We all have a little voice in the back of our head that speaks to us at up to five hundred words a minute. Well, Jandee’s voice said, Not in this lifetime, you’ll never make ten thousand in a month, and so on. The Law of Belief is whatever you tell yourself over and over and over again, you will eventually believe.

I told Jandee this: "Speak this new idea of making $10,000 into existence. Embrace the Law of Belief. Jandee, write it on an index card. I want you to tell yourself over and over and over again that you’ll earn ten thousand dollars in the next thirty days." Thirty days pass and guess what happened. Nothing! Sixty days passed, though, and she made a little over ten thousand dollars! About six months after Jandee’s breakthrough I called her on the phone and asked her how she was doing. We started talking. I asked her point-blank how much money had she made last month. "I made, um, thirty-three last month." "You only made thirty-three hundred?" "No, Eric. I made thirty-three thousand!" This is six months after she believed five thousand dollars was a lot of money in a month! So, I want you to take that new doubled amount. Speak it into existence and watch the income miracle happen for you.

The Power of Identity

Part of the purpose of your subconscious mind is to keep you consistent with your identity. One way to help you determine your identity is to start listening to how you describe yourself to others when you use the word "I."

Know that when you use the word "I," you may be creating an identity belief that will drive you on a subconscious level. Here are some examples:

  • I am not good at sales.
  • I am not good at time management.
  • I am always late.

I want to share another quick story to demonstrate the power of identity. It’s a famous story about the scorpion and the frog. There’s a scorpion that wants to get to the other side of the river but he doesn’t know how to swim. He sees a frog and, knowing the frog can swim, asks the frog to transport him across the river on his back. The frog says no. The scorpion says, "Why can’t you help me?" And the frog says, "Because scorpions sting frogs, and I don’t want you to sting me, Mister Scorpion." Well, this particular scorpion was a very persuasive scorpion. He convinced the frog that he wouldn’t kill him. So the scorpion gets on the frog’s back and they start swimming across the river. They get about midway across the river and, wouldn’t you know it, the scorpion stings the frog. As the frog is drowning, the frog looks up at the scorpion and says, "Mister Scorpion! Why did you sting me? I’m about to drown. I’m going to be killed. You’re going to be killed. Why’d you do that?" The scorpion replies, "Because that’s what scorpion’s do—they sting frogs." Even though it meant death to the scorpion and the frog, the scorpion had to stay consistent with his identity of itself.

Do you know why you drive the car you drive? Why you wear the clothes you wear? Earn the income that you earn? Live in the house that you live in? One reason why is because that’s how you view yourself. You view yourself as somebody that’s at the level of success that you’re currently at. I can almost hear you screaming, "But Eric I’m not earning the income of my dreams! I’m not driving my dream car! What are you talking about?"

What I’m talking about is we become what our self-image is. Part of the purpose of this part of your brain is to keep you consistent with your identity. A master influencer attracts into their life whatever they want. They earn the income of their dreams. They drive the car of their dreams. They have great relationships. They make a tremendous difference in the world. If you start viewing yourself as a master of influence, then that’s what you will become.
